Canterbury firefighters will continue quelling a 134-hectare fire at West Melton - into the night

Canterbury firefighters will continue quelling a 134-hectare fire at West Melton - into the night

The 70-strong firefighting team have contained the blaze to a six-point-five kilometre perimeter.

Crews expect it'll take at least two more days to completely extinguish - in ongoing hot and windy conditions.

Assistant Commander Dave Key says they'll be monitoring hotspots overnight.

He says tomorrow they'll bring in more crews to contain the fire to the perimeter and work their way inwards.
