Police say an officer did the right thing to try to stop a speeding motorcyclist - before a fatal crash in Whakatane

Police say an officer did the right thing to try to stop a speeding motorcyclist - before a fatal crash in Whakatane

The rider died after colliding head-on with a car - after a high speed police chase on State Highway 30 in March.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the officer should have abandoned it sooner.

Police acknowledge the findings - which say there is no evidence to suggest the officer's actions caused the crash.

They say the rider was travelling at nearly twice the 60 kilometre-an-hour speed limit, posing a significant risk to drivers.
