More details are emerging around a tragic death on the Coromandel

Police have confirmed a young person died after being found at the bottom of a cliff at Hahei Beach on Saturday night.

A second young person was rescued uninjured after being trapped on the cliff.

Thames-Coromandel mayor Len Salt says the incident happened at the northern end of Hahei, near a number of walking tracks.

He says his thoughts go out to the loved ones of the person who died, and it's a tragic start to the new year.
