Police are calling for witnesses to an assault in a popular Wellington walking area

A woman was assaulted halfway up the stairs of the Rangituhi walking track at around 3:30 on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say she was assaulted by a man wearing a dark coloured long sleeve top, dark coloured track pants and a cap.

They ask any witnesses to contact police.

There'll be reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days.
