Auckland's Central Fire Station is back up and running after a closure on Saturday, when asbestos was found in dust samples

Auckland's Central Fire Station is back up and running after a closure on Saturday, when asbestos was found in dust samples

Testing carried out over the weekend at the Pitt Street station has since come back negative.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand says asbestos was removed from the station last year and they didn't expect another positive result.

The New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union is now seeking an independent inquiry into how firefighters and other staff were exposed again.

The union says it's been calling for full remediation of the site for years, but Fire and Emergency insists it's taken sufficient precautions.
