Michael Douglas has remembered Diane Keaton as one of Hollywood's "greatest icons"

The 81-year-old actor has reflected on his "fond memories" of sharing the screen with the late actress in their 2014 movie And So It Goes in the wake of her death over the weekend at the age of 79

Sharing a photo of them together, he wrote: "RIP to my friend Diane Keaton. A heartbreaking loss of one of the greatest icons in our industry. I have so many fond memories of working with Diane on our film And So It Goes nearly twelve years ago. Sending my deepest condolences to the Keaton family during this difficult time."

Michael's Basic Instinct co-star Sharon Stone commented on the post.

She wrote: "And to you my friend and mentor."

Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola - who directed Diane in the Godfather movies - remembered the actress as "creativity personified".

He wrote on Instagram: "Words can't express the wonder and talent of Diane Keaton. Endlessly intelligent, so beautiful.

"From her earliest performances in "Hair" and throughout her amazing career, she was an extraordinary actor. I saw her in the film "Lovers and Other Strangers" and knew I had to have her play Kay in The Godfather, (which she told me she based on my wife Ellie) and her wonderful work in "Annie Hall" while simultaneously setting a new fashion trend.

"Everything about Diane was creativity personified.(sic)"

The Woman King actress Viola Davis has been left distraught by the loss of someone who "defined womanhood".

She said: "No!! No!!! No!! God, not yet, NO!!! Man... you defined womanhood.

"The pathos, humor, levity, your ever-present youthfulness and vulnerability - you tattooed your SOUL into every role, making it impossible to imagine anyone else inhabiting them. You were undeniably, unapologetically YOU!!! Loved you. Man... rest well. God bless your family, and I know angels are flying you home. [broken heart emojis] (sic)"

Speaking at Hello Sunshine's Shine Away event in Los Angeles, Reese urged people to be their "unique, interesting self" in honour of Diane, who she met when she was just 15 years old and auditioning for 1991 TV movie Wildflower, which was directed by the Annie Hall star.

She said: "From Annie Hall to The Godfather to Something's Gotta Give, she is just incredible and indelible and truly an original person. So for Diane, watch one of her movies and wear a really cool, interesting outfit, black and white. Take a cool picture and just live your dream. Just be your unique, interesting self, I think Diane would be really happy."
