Over 40 trampers evacuated, and an estimated 300 hectares burned, as a fire rages in the Tongariro Forest Park

Thirteen crews from eight brigades supported by helicopters with monsoon buckets are working to contain the blaze burning towards Mount Ngauruhoe.

The fire was first reported at about 3.15 in the afternoon.

Department of Conservation Central North Island Operations Director Damian Coutts says 43 hikers and a hut warden were airlifted from Mangatepopo Hut as a precaution.

Staff are providing welfare at Whakapapa Village.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Northern Circuit remain closed, as does State Highway 47 between the intersection with state highways 46 and 48..
