Police are acknowledging a watchdog report - deeming an Auckland officer justified in shooting an armed man attempting a carjacking

In September 2023 the officer shot an offender twice in the back as he held a truck driver at gunpoint.

He'd attempted to steal multiple vehicles in Henderson, after a motorway police chase.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the officer's action was appropriate considering the risk of death or serious injury.

Superintendent Naila Hassan says she is incredibly proud of the officers who moved with courage that day against a imminent threat.
