Mod Sun says his split from ex-fiancée Avril Lavigne was "brutal"

The musicians first started dating in 2021 and were briefly engaged in March 2022, but called it quits less than a year later.

Avril moved on with rapper Tyga in March that year, but that romance fizzled out, and Mod Sun was left heartbroken performing their duet Flames at his concerts.

Recounting how they first met, he told the Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde Podcast: "We met through a truly awesome label making music.

"It was lovely. She was a true talent being around. I write and produce songs for other artists, so it was amazing coming up with an idea and seeing someone so f****** talented sing it."

Mod Sun had also co-written tracks for Avril's 2022 album Love Sux.

And while he says the Complicated hitmaker helped him deal with some mental health issues and was a "wonderful influence" on her, it conceded that they were "two different people".

He reflected: "We're two different people, but I think I had a great influence on her.

"I think she couldn't have had a more wonderful influence on me from the side of [helping me] grow up. Like now, I'm very secure of who I am, because I've been lost in the last three years of wondering, 'Where do I fit in?'"

The songwriter explained that he had to do some inner work to lead with "empathy" and only wishes "love" on his ex-partners.

He said: "I pray every single day, and in those prayers, I'm like, 'Just allow me to lead with empathy and be a shining light.'

"My form of empathy is finally attached to being like, 'Dude, you've got to get outside of yourself. When someone does you wrong, stop thinking f*** them, you did me dirty, and I'm out for revenge.' It started being like, 'Step in their position.'"

He added: "If we had done this talk three months ago, I might've been like, 'F*** that person. I hope she hears this.'

But I'm now just like, 'If I run into you? It's all love. I hope you're well.'"

Mod Sun went on to date Love Is Blind star Brittany Wisniewski for five months late last year.
