Warnings of fire-risks this weekend as Summer sun, strong winds, and low humidity hit the country

Metservice has issued a strong wind warning for the Canterbury High Country, and a watch for Southern Lakes, parts of Southland and Central Otago until Monday.

Canterbury has forecast temperatures in the high 20s today, with 32 degree highs for Hawkes Bay.

Meteorologist Develin Lynden says conditions like that, combine for for an increased risk of fires starting.

He says people should be handling fire carefully, and avoid parking cars close to long grass.
