A$AP Rocky has been appointed brand ambassador for Chanel

The 37-year-old rapper - whose real name is Rakim Mayers - will be reprenting the French fashion house because of his "talent, curiousity and limitless creativity" and the upmarket fashion firm are delighted to have him on board.

Chanel artistic director Matthieu Blazy said: "Rocky is an incredible artist who puts his heart and soul into every project he's involved in, in addition to being an incredible human being.

"Musician, actor, father, friend...he brings so much to the table and always delivers with kindness. We are thrilled to welcome him to Chanel and I'm thrilled to work together again."

The Praise the Lord hitmaker is looking forward to working with Matthieu.

He said in his own statement: "Matthieu's imagination is pushing fashion forward. His designs feel both sensitive and strong, they're grounded in reality but at the same time, always invite one to wonder. I'm so excited to see him at Chanel."

To mark the collaboration, Michel Gondry has released a short film starring Rocky opposite Margaret Qualley and the rapper was thrilled to work with the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director.

He told Vanity Fair: "All of my music videos that I direct derived some inspiration from one of his films. I plan on directing my own feature. I look up to people like him.

"I feel like a kid in a candy store. On a normal day, I'm usually perky, but today I'm fanning out. I hope I'm not annoying him."

The short film was shot in New York, much to the delight of the Sundress hitmaker.

He said: "I usually walk around in my pajamas to go to the bodega, so this is pretty normal.

"There's really no place like home. And this is the hub for creatives, artists: New York City...this is it."

Rocky - who has three children with partner Rihanna - is proud to be a "tastemaker".

He said: "I always say, your song has to match the video. The video has to match your outfit. Your outfit has to match the girl. The girl has to match the aura. The aura has to match the city. And everything has to feel cohesive. I'm a tastemaker.

"I guess it takes a little minute for stale people to catch on."
