David Corenswet had one disagreement with James Gunn on the set of Superman

The 32-year-old actor took on the titular superhero in the director's 2025 DC Universe film, but the pair had different ideas when it came to the kiss Clark Kent/Superman shares with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) at the end of the blockbuster.

The 32-year-old actor took on the titular superhero in the director's 2025 DC Universe film, but the pair had different ideas when it came to the kiss Clark Kent/Superman shares with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) at the end of the blockbuster.

Speaking to fellow actor Jonathan Bailey for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors series, Corenswet said: “James, when I was doing that chuckle when she says, ‘I love you too,’ he came up to me and said, ‘It’s not working. It needs to be solemn.'

“I was like, ‘No! The whole point is, I f****** know that you love me.’”
He continued: “Credit to James. He was right on 90 percent of everything, but on that one, he saw that chuckle was a very truthful thing.”

Bailey reacted: “That is what makes a leading man smash it out of the park.”
Superman took more than $611 million worldwide, making it the year’s highest-grossing superhero release.

And DC is set to start filming the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in April 2026.
Gunn told The Howard Stern Show: "That was at the beginning when I took on DC and I promised myself I’m slowing down at least a tiny bit.

"Although I am creating the Superman sequel that we’re starting to shoot in April or so. … I’m done writing that for the most part.”

The DCU studio head also offered a hint of what fans can expect, with Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor taking center stage alongside Corenswet's Superman.

He said: “It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.

“And it’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly.”

The movie is set to hit the big screen on July 9, 2027.
