Officials are opening State Highway 47 - with restrictions - after a large fire in Tongariro National Park was fully contained

Officials are opening State Highway 47 - with restrictions - after a large fire in Tongariro National Park was fully contained

The blaze broke out yesterday, and spread to cover almost 300 hectares.

One fire crew will be the ground overnight to monitor the fire, while a drone crew will search for hotspots.

Incident Controller Renee Potae says the highway will have speed restrictions, and potentially be a single lane under stop/go controls from 9pm.

She says fire trucks are still likely to be in the area for at least another 24 hours - so motorists need to stick to the traffic controls.
