Firefighters are returning to battle a blaze today at South Taranaki's Waiinu Beach - after rain was welcomed yesterday

Firefighters are returning to battle a blaze today at South Taranaki's Waiinu Beach - after rain was welcomed yesterday

It broke out about 2pm on Monday, putting Waiinu Village residents on standby for possible evacuation.

Fire and Emergency says it's about 70 percent contained and covering roughly 30 hectares - with Monday's 100 hectare estimate inaccurate due to heavy smoke.

Meanwhile, crews will also continue fighting a vegetation fire near Parikino - in rural Whanganui - after firefighters were pushed out yesterday due to rain.

Fire and Emergency says about 100 hectares of pine has burned in Lismore Forest blaze since Sunday.
