A critical road which connects Gisborne and the Eastern Bay of Plenty re-opens this morning for essential travel

A critical road which connects Gisborne and the Eastern Bay of Plenty re-opens this morning for essential travel

State Highway Two through the Waioweka Gorge will open - under piloted convoys - starting from 7am.

Crews have spent the last three weeks repairing the road, damaged by flooding and slips.

Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz says it's a lifeline for businesses, residents and visitors.

She says they're extremely grateful people can now start moving over the gorge in convoys.
