A Waikato fire chief is worried police cut backs in his area will one day cost someone their life

A Waikato fire chief is worried police cut backs in his area will one day cost someone their life

Two firefighters were assaulted at Waihi Beach last night, when they encountered a drunken mob of onlookers at a car crash.

In 2015, a Waikato police review resulted in station closures in the area and officers transferred to other areas.

Waihi chief Peter Harwood says the lack of police now has the potential to put lives at risk.

He says one day they'll be a lack of police presence when it's really needed.

He says the ability to respond quickly to incidents has been taken away, and with an increasing population that's not a smart move.
