A gutsy effort in the final marathon leg lead Braden Currie to victory in the 2021 New Zealand Ironman in Taupo, in a time of seven hours and 57 seconds

It's the Wanaka based multisport athlete's second Taupo title.

Currie says he knew Mike Phillips could catch him on the run, so he put his foot down at the 16 kilometre mark.

Phillips placed second in eight hours and six minutes, and Kyle Smith finished third in eight hours and eight minutes in what was his first ever Ironman.

Hannah Wells has just crossed the finish line to claim the women's race in , in her maiden Ironman.
