The lower North Island could be more prone to tremors than previously thought

The lower North Island could be more prone to tremors than previously thought

GNS Scientists have researched the northern Ohariu and Tokomaru faults, that stretch between Horowhenua and Palmerston North.

Before the study it was thought the Tokomaru fault went off every two to six thousand years -- but initial estimates suggest quakes happen on it every 200 to 400 years.

The study's lead author, Dr Genevieve Coffey believes with the area's growing population, it's necessary to know what's happening under our feet.

She thinks it highlights the importance of what these nearby faults are capable of doing.
