According to Stats NZ , the district grew by 8 percent, or almost four-thousand people, in the year to the end of June.
Selwyn's had the second-highest increase at 5.2 percent and the Mackenzie comes in third, with 3.6.
Dunedin, with 190 more deaths than births, was one of 16 territorial authorities experiencing a natural decrease.
Auckland's population lifted by 47-thousand, or 2.8 percent, driven by migration.
