Jean Hurring nee Stewart, New Zealand's first Olympic swimming medallist, has died aged 89

Jean Hurring nee Stewart, New Zealand's first Olympic swimming medallist, has died aged 89

She took bronze in the 100m backstroke at the Helsinki Games of 1952.

Stewart overcame the adversity of travel to achieve the feat, and the firing of a human cannonball at 11pm each night to deprive her and soon-to-be long jump gold medallist Yvette Corlett of sleep.
