The national grid operator wants to spend more than 30 million dollars to upgrade Hawke's Bay's Redclyffe substation - badly hit by Cyclone Gabrielle

Executive, Mark Ryall, says Transpower wants to boost weather resilience in the region, and plans to raise the station's ground level - and build new equipment.

Ryall says the upgrade to meet future growth and demand, and protect against extreme weather - could take years.

    Planning should start next month.
