The lower North Island has been shaken awake, with a moderate earthquake rocking the region

The 4.7 magnitude quake struck five kilometres north of Upper Hutt, with more than 10-thousand people feeling the jolt.

One Upper Hutt resident told our newsroom it felt like a train drove under their house.
