James McAvoy is also negotiating a role as Assange's right-hand man Daniel Domscheit-Berg, The Wrap reports.
It is not known what part the 48-year-old actress would play in the Josh Singer-scripted movie.
The script is loosely based upon Daniel's tell-all book 'Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website'.
Benedict is the frontrunner for the role of Julian after recently breaking into Hollywood with 'War Horse' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness'.
The film will chart the ups and downs of the journalist, who caused embarrassment to world governments by leaking diplomatic cables around the world after launching WikiLeaks in 2006.
He is currently housed in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been granted diplomatic asylum.
Laura can next be seen opposite Bill Murray in 'Hyde Park on Hudson' as Franklin D Roosevelt's mistress Margaret Suckley.
