A rahui is in place on the Tongariro Crossing, following the death of a tramper

Police say the man died at the Red Crater after having a medical event.

Police were alerted at 8.40 this morning when another person activated a personal locator beacon.

The man's body has now been recovered and flown from the mountain by helicopter.

Senior Constable Barry Shepherd says a karakia has been held at the Mangatepopo Road end of the crossing.

A rahui will remain in place until Tuesday.
