Police CBD cordon enforcement policy released
A large number of cordons remain in place in central Christchurch to prevent access into the restricted central city high risk area.
23 February 2011
A large number of cordons remain in place in central Christchurch to prevent access into the restricted central city high risk area.
These cordons are staffed by Police, Army or a mix of both.
Entry within the cordon area is strictly prohibited. The only exceptions are:
• Residents, who must produce identification; and
• Legitimate workers, who must also produce identification. The wearing of a high visibility jacket is not considered identification in its own right.
Police accept that people may be entering the restricted area without permission. High level visible police patrols have been tasked to intercept, question and remove these people.
Those who are found inside the cordon area without lawful excuse are committing an offence under Section 100 of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act and are liable to arrest.
These people can only be searched after arrest.
