Zelda Williams teased over video game name

Zelda Williams has revealed she was teased over her computer game-inspired name when she was at school but she doesn't care because she loves her unusual moniker.

Zelda Williams was teased over her computer game-inspired name when she was at school.

The 22-year-old actress was given the unusual moniker by her father Robin Williams because he was such a fan of the 'Legend of Zelda' Nintendo game, but it wasn't popular with her class mates.

Zelda – whose mother is Marsha Garces, Robin's second wife - said: "When I was in grade school and girls made fun of me for it, I was like, 'Mom I'm gonna change my name when I am 18.' But then I ended up loving it again. Constantly people are like, 'That's the coolest name ever.' So I actually really enjoy it.

"From what I've been told, they were playing Zelda when my mom was pregnant with me. I think they just liked the name for a little girl, and it's a princess as well."

Robin, 60, has confirmed he named his daughter after the original game in the hugely popular series, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, because he just loved the name and the game so much.

Speaking in a promotional video for Nintendo, the 'Happy Feet Two' star explained: "We thought of it because we were playing the game 'Legend of Zelda' at the time. I bought one of the first Nintendo systems and brought that home with a very large TV and set it up. It was amazing because it was addictive and I was playing it for hours and hours and hours and hours.

"A lot of people ask if she's named after F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife. No. It's Zelda for the 'Legend of Zelda' … It's magical, as she is."

The latest game in the series 'The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword' is out now.
