Catherine Zeta-Jones has received an honorary fellowship from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

The 43-year-old Welsh born actress – who now resides in the US with her husband Michael Douglas – was the recipient of the prestigious degree along with Matthew Rhys and Rhys Ifans.

The college’s principal Hilary Boulding said: “We’re delighted to honour these distinguished artists who have achieved international distinction in their field.

“Many have made both a significant contribution to the cultural life of Wales and also raised Wales’ profile within the arts industry worldwide.

“It’s particularly exciting to welcome these prestigious fellows in the same month that the Royal Welsh College’s training was ranked in the Guardian University League Tables among the top five UK conservatoires for its music and the best in the UK for drama training.”

Catherine's husband Michael recently revealed the 'Chicago' actress has managed to get her bipolar II disorder - which can cause high and low mood swings, as well as depression - under control after checking into a clinic to monitor the condition in April.

He said: "Sometimes you don't think you need any meds at all, and you forget your meds. Then all of a sudden, you get on a real ride. But she's fine. She's got it stabled out. She's doing great and I can't wait to see her."

The 68-year-old actor - who has two children Dylan, 12, and 10-year-old Cary with Catherine - admitted the mental health condition is unpredictable and can creep up on you at any time but insists the troublesome time has bought them closer together.

He explained: "It's a slippery slope, this bipolar stuff."
