Usher bid $80,000 on a single photograph.

The 'Scream' singer offered the staggering amount of cash in the hope of snapping up a Richard Avedon photograph at the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation Angel Ball in New York City on Tuesday night, but unfortunately the sum wasn't large enough to win the item.

Celebrity jeweller Lorraine Schawartz - who worked with Kanye West to design Kim Kardashian's 15 carat engagement ring - outbid Usher by forking out more than $85,000 for the coveted portrait.

Usher later took to the stage with Pharrell Williams, who has been treating fans at the star-studded event to a performance of his hits including Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines'.

The hit producer was later seen in a rare display of affection with his new wife, Helen Lasichanh - who he married in an intimate ceremony earlier this month - as they danced across the room together.

Meanwhile, Tina Knowles - who divorced from Beyonce's father Matthew in 2011 - reportedly hit the dance floor with her date actor Richard Lawson.

A source added to People magazine: "She looked amazing. They were like teenagers on the dance floor." The charity ball reportedly raised nearly $3 million in aid of cancer research.
