Joan Rivers was in "good spirits" the night before she was rushed to hospital following respiratory arrest.

The 81-year-old comedienne appeared "absolutely fine" as she attended a meal at the Amaranth Restaurant in New York, before cracking a joke about death during a performance at Laurie Beechman Theatre on Wednesday night.

An audience member told the New York Daily News newspaper that Joan had said: "I'm 81 -- I could go at any moment. I could fall over right here and you all could say, 'I was there!' "

The fan added: "If you had me guess her age, I'd say she was in her 50s.

"She didn't miss a step, she didn't go ditzy, she didn't forget anything and her timing was amazing."

The 'Fashion Police' host was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York yesterday (28.08.14) after she stopped breathing during an operation on her vocal cords at the Yorkville Endoscopy earlier in the day.

The blonde beauty was said to be in a critical but stable condition after doctors managed to restart her heart following a reported cardiac arrest.

A hospital representative, Sid Dinsay, said in a statement: "Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to. Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available."

Joan's daughter Melissa, 46, caught a flight to New York yesterday to be at her mother's bedside.
