Ben Affleck has congratulated George Clooney on his wedding

The 'Argo' star may have been absent as the 53-year-old tied the knot with human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in Venice yesterday (27.09.14) but has offered warm words to the happy couple and wishes them "the best".

He said during an interview with ET Canada: "[George] found a great girl and I'm happy for them. I wish them the best."

When asked why he wasn't present at his pal's nuptials, Ben - who is currently promoting his new movie 'Gone Girl' in the United States - joked: "Yeah. Some people have to work and everybody else gets to be in Venice."

George wed the brunette beauty, 36, at the luxury seven-star Aman Canal Grande resort in front of around 100 guests including Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, Matt Damon and his wife Luciana, Emily Blunt, Bill Murray, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

According to E! News, the couple opted for a white themed wedding and exchanged their vows on a podium that was placed in front of a large wall of white candles.

The venue had been decorated with white roses, lilies and carnations, while guests are reported to have sipped on champagne and red wine and partied past midnight.

A representative for the actor confirmed the marriage had taken place just after sunset last night.

They said: "George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were married today in a private ceremony in Venice, Italy."
