Carrie Underwood learned she was expecting a baby boy while having dinner with her husband

The 'Something In the Water' singer and spouse Mike Fisher are expecting their first child together but felt the sonographer's office was too "sterile" a place to learn the exciting news about the tot's gender, so asked her to write it down for them to read when they were ready.

She said: "It's kind of a sterile place. We got to see all the pictures and everything. It was really cool to see that, but whenever she'd get near those parts, we would look away."

Instead, the pair took the sealed envelope to a restaurant when they went on a date night.

Carrie, 31, added to ABC News radio: "[It was] just the two of us in a nicer setting, but we both knew.

"So, that was just confirming our suspicions. We didn't really speak of it before, 'cause we were both just like, 'Whatever. It's all good.' But we knew it was a boy."

News broke that the country star is having a boy at the recent CMA Awards thanks to Carrie's co-host Brad Paisley, and the blonde beauty claimed she always knew he wouldn't be able to keep it secret.

She laughed: "Brad's got loose lips. He's a blabber mouth!. So, I was like, 'I'm not gonna tell you until we're ready for the rest of the world to know, 'cause I know you'll tell people.'"

The 'American Idol' winner also admitted she and her 34-year-old hockey player husband were overwhelmed when they recently went shopping to prepare for their new arrival, who is due next spring.

She said: "We went to Babies'R'Us and we were walking around and I was, like, 'This is just so overwhelming!'

"I just don't want to get the wrong things, you know? I don't know what most of it does. There are, like, 5,000 things to choose from, and I'm like, 'Do we need that?! I don't know!' "
