Jennifer Lawrence's "many-sided qualities" give her universal appeal.

The 23-year-old actress portrays the lead character Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games' franchise and movie bosses believe a big key to the series' success is how so many people can relate to the star.

Producer Nina Jacobson said: "Jennifer's many-sided qualities as an actor and how much dimension she has invites anybody in.

"You can be 15 or 50 and you feel for her all the same. Or you can be with your first love or in a 25-year relationship and still connect with how hard it can be to be pulled in different directions the way that Katniss is."

Although the movies are based on a series of young adult novels, the producers have sought to ensure they can appeal to an older audience as well.

Nina added: "We're making these movies so they are as rich and satisfying for an adult audience as they are for the original young adults who made them so popular."

The final instalment, 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay', has been split into two parts and director Francis Lawrence found there was a natural way to separate the story.

He told SFX magazine: "There are definitely overarching themes through the whole series, but there are two distinct stories in 'Mockingjay'.

"We knew there were two distinct stories we could tell so it was about figuring out where that end is for 'Part 1' that tells the story properly."
