Kim Kardashian West felt "helpless" when her father died

The 34-year-old reality TV star's dad Robert Kardashian lost his battle with cancer in 2003 and she wants to do whatever she can to help other young people going through similar ordeals.

Kim said: "My father passed away from cancer. I remember what it was like when my dad was going through it. You see the kids that are so strong. They feel so helpless. You want to do anything to help them."

The 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' star has played an active role at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, visiting young patients and attempting to brighten their time at the hospital as much as she can, sitting at the patients bedside alone, and sometimes bringing her husband Kanye West - with who she has 22-month-old daughter North - or her sisters, and will even come with gifts like iTunes gift cards or beauty products for the youngsters.

Speaking to Variety magazine's Power of Women issue - which also honoured Lena Dunham, Glen Close, Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Weisz - Kim said: "We'll sit and paint our nails together."

Last year, Kim remembered her father on what would have been his 70th birthday.

Alongside an old picture featuring a smiling Robert and herself as a toddler, she wrote: "Happy Birthday dad! Can't believe you would have been 70 today! Bet you're up there eating tons of Ralph's cake! Miss you & love you!(sic)"
