Louis Tomlinson spent over $5,000 on an animal-themed nursery for his son Freddie.

The One Direction hunk and former lover Briana Jungworth - who gave birth to their first child on January 22 - paid a visit to the upmarket Petit Tresor boutique in West Hollywood before the tot was born and splashed out on a number of items for the youngster.

And it seems the pair knew they were expecting a boy as an insider confirmed to E! News that they purchased "adorable blue baby layette items" during their shopping spree in November.

Among Louis and Briana's purchases were a Bancroft closed crib priced at $2,995, an $89 penguin cuddly toy and a Jem + Bea diaper bag for $790.

The 'Best Song Ever' hitmaker may be hoping Freddie follows in his own musical footsteps, as he and Briana also picked up a mini red piano for $119.

The source revealed: "Their selections were quite European and sophisticated in taste."

The former couple also had a strong idea of the theme they wanted for the nursery.

The source added: "They picked out lots of items with lions on. They bought lion toys, a lion blanket, a lion onesie and a very cute lion hooded towel.

"It might be because the lion symbol is associated with Great Britain and the English soccer team. Perhaps they're making sure their baby knows about his British roots."

The 24-year-old singer - who is renting a property in Calabasas, California to be nearer to his little boy - wanted little Freddie to have everything Briana thought he should have and was "happy" to pay for it all.

The source added: "Louis was happy for Briana to have whatever she wanted and they seemed to enjoy picking out the items together. He paid for everyone on his credit card and the bill came to just over $5,000. It's not every day you get someone spending that much in a baby boutique."
