Shawn Mendes scooped two prizes at the 2016 BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards

The 18-year-old Canadian singer was named Best International Solo Artist and his song 'Stitches' was named Best Single at the star-studded ceremony in London on Sunday (23.10.16).

Taylor Swift was named Most Entertaining Celeb, while Adele was honoured as Best British Solo Artist.

5 Seconds of Summer and The Vamps were named Best International Group and Best British Group respectively.

Former One Direction hunk Niall Horan delighted the audience at the SSE Wembley Arena in London when he surprised the crowd by kicking off the event with a performance of his debut solo song 'This Town'.

However, the sound cut during his performance but the 10,000-strong audience helped out by singing along and Niall insisted he didn't feel strange going it alone.

Asked by co-host Nick Grimshaw if he felt lonely without the rest of the group, he said "definitely not".

He added: "It's hard to feel lonely with 10,000 people in front of you."

Other performers at the event - which was co-hosted by singer Dua Lipa and Bastille members Dan Smith and Kyle Simmons - included Shawn, Jess Glynne, Little Mix, The Vamps and DNCE.

As well as entertainment prizes, the ceremony also honoured inspirational stories and achievements from a number of teenagers, including 15-year-old Lewis, who has set up a social platform for ill and disabled youngsters while battling a brain tumour, Niamh, also 15, who has been left paralysed by a rare illness but and runs an online support group for young people with chronic illness, and Cancer Research UK fundraisers 17-year-old Joe and 15-year-old Toby who got involved with the charity after their best friend Arran died from a brain tumour.

The first Make it Digital Teen Hero Award was presented to Lucy, 17, and Lauren, 16, whose idea for a lightweight medical emergency kit has been put into effect in the military field.

The awards were voted for by BBC Radio 1 listeners.
