Hilary Duff says the last five years of her life have been "the best and the hardest"

The 29-year-old actress welcomed her son Luca Cruz Comrie - whom she shares with her ex-husband Mike Comrie - into the world five years ago, and has taken to Instagram to post a heartfelt message in celebration of his birthday, saying her life has been a struggle since he was born, but she believes she is "blessed" to have him.

Posting a picture of her son on the site on Sunday (19.03.17), the 'Younger' actress wrote: "Hey kid.... the past 5 years have been the BEST, hardest, most blessed years of my life. I love you so much. The world is yours my love ...I hope you take it Happy Birthday Luca Cruz (sic)"

The news comes after the 'A Cinderella Story' star previously said she felt "judged" for having her first child at the young age of 24.

She said: "I feel like I was judged for having a baby too soon, and getting married too soon and now, I'm pigeonholed for being a 'mom'.

"Lots of women in the industry that don't have a child yet are judged.

"We are the most in demand and the most desirable, but the most judged and the hardest on one another. It's so much scrutiny."

Meanwhile, Hilary admits being divorced from Mike - whom she split with last year - "sucked" at first, but she's now thankful that she can take a break and share the parenting duties.

She said previously: "Some of my friends tell me, 'God, it must be so nice, you get a break from your kid because you share him.' I'm divorced, and it sucks.

"Well, it did suck for a while; now it's just normal. But it's true, I do get a break. I had Luca by myself for a few weeks, no help, when Mike was on the road, and when he got home I was like, 'He's yours! Bye!'"
