Kate Bosworth, Sarah Wayne Callies and Jason Ritter are set to star in 'Long Road Home'

The 34-year-old actress will star in the National Geographic television series alongside Michael Kelly, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Sisto and Patrick Schwarzenegger, which follows the events dubbed Black Sunday in the military when a US platoon was ambushed by Iraqi insurgents on April 4, 2004, in Baghdad.

Based on the bestselling book of the same name, 'Long Road Home' tells the story of the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, who were attacked in Sadr City.

Kelly will star as Lieutenant Colonel Gary Volesky, who alongside Captain Troy Denomy (Ritter), leads the rescue mission to help the US soldiers whilst Bosworth will star as Denomy's wife Gina and Callies will play LeAnne Volesky, the Lieutenant Colonel's wife.

Fisher plays 24-year-old Pfc. Tomas Young, a soldier seriously wounded in the battle, who later becomes an activist for peace whilst Sisto will portray Staff Sgt. Robert Miltenberger, a soldier nearing retirement who has his service time extended for this mission, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

ex ecutive vice-president and head of scripted at National Geographic, Carolyn G. Bernstein, said: "The Long Road Home is an extraordinary story of war, dramatising not just the heroism and sacrifice on the front lines but the family bonds and courage on the home front.

"We are thrilled to have such a strong, talented cast on board to portray the real-life heroes - the courageous soldiers and their equally courageous families - who sacrificed so much for our country."

Whilst ex ecutive producer Mike Medavoy added: "When I read The Long Road Home, it reminded me of past films I had been involved with, namely Coming Home and Platoon, both of which dealt with the brutality of war - before, during and after. I'm excited to be doing this with such a talented group of people and National Geographic."

Phil Abraham and Mikael Salomon will direct whilst Salomon, Jason Clark, Mikko Alanne, Benjamin Anderson and Edward McGurn will all ex ecutive produce.

Alanne, who adapted the series for television, will also serve as showrunner.
