Tamou wary of Taumalolo NRL showdown

Penrith prop James Tamou admits he's not looking forward to coming up against former NRL teammate Jason Taumalolo when the Panthers take on North Queensland.

    - article from www.rugbyleague.co.nz

When James Tamou decided to part ways with North Queensland at the end of the 2016 NRL season, he had mixed emotions.

Not because he was saying goodbye to mates with whom he'd forged a close bond for eight years, but because he knew Jason Taumalolo would be running at him from then on.

"That was one of the things I said when I signed down here: I'm going to have to go up against big Jase," Tamou said.

"That's just part of it. You get these players that are tremendously talented and possess speed and power like he does.

"You just have to do your best; just put your body in front and be a speed bump. I'll try."

Tamou has such a high opinion of his former teammate that he believes Penrith's chances against North Queensland at Pepper Stadium on Saturday hinge on stopping Taumalolo.

The 24-year-old Kiwi Test forward has topped the NRL run metre list this year with 3492m - an average of 194m per game.

    "He's a weapon," Tamou said.

"It's one of those things - you do your best against something like that.

"He has too much speed, power, footwork."

Not only are Penrith's finals hopes on the line - after jumping into the top eight with Sunday's win over the Wests Tigers - they feel like they owe the Cowboys one after their last encounter.

Kyle Feldt scored a spectacular flying last-ditch try and Ethan Lowe kicked a clutch sideline conversion to give a Johnathan Thurston-less Cowboys a win in round 16.

"That was tough, right on the dot there, especially up your against your old team," Tamou said.

"In saying that, there was a lot to take out of that game. We didn't get the two points but, out on the field, there were a lot of positives."

The Panthers continued to sweat on the fitness of skipper Matt Moylan after he was restricted to light duties on Wednesday.

Moylan is recovering from a hamstring injury and hopes to run on Thursday, however will be given up until Friday's captain's run to prove himself.
