Meech snares Laser bronze at test event

Sam Meech pips compatriot Tom Saunders for a bronze medal at the sailing world championships Test event in Denmark.

Kiwi sailor Sam Meech has fought back to clinch a bronze medal in the Laser class at a world championships test event in Aarhus, Denmark.

Meech, who also won bronze at last year's Rio Olympics, placed fourth in the double-points medal race to sneak past compatriot Tom Saunders, who was eighth on Sunday.

Saunders, who was in the top three for much of the regatta, finished two points behind Meech in fourth place.

Matthew Wearn held onto his overnight lead to secure gold, ahead of fellow-Australian Tom Burton.

Bronze represented a bold fightback from Meech, who was 43rd following a disastrous first day when he suffered a disqualification in race two.

He picked up New Zealand's second medal at the regatta after Nacra 17 pair Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders picked up a silver medal on Saturday.
