    Former welfare cheat investigator jailed

    Police have successfully recovered property to the value of more than $260,000 after a former Ministry of Social Development investigator was jailed for fraud.


    Property worth more than $260,000 and belonging to a welfare cheat investigator found guilty of fraud has been forfeited, police say.

    Nabjeet Singh, 48, was jailed for two years and nine months when he appeared in Wellington District Court on Thursday.

    He was sentenced on charges of using a document to obtain a pecuniary advantage and providing false information, while employed as a Ministry of Social Development investigator.

    Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Murray, of the Central Asset Recovery Unit, says the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offending.

    He says police, under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act, successfully sought a forfeiture of property to the value of $263,956.

    This comprised the proceeds of the sale of a dwelling and bonus bonds.

    "Mr Singh's corrupt and dishonest behaviour whilst employed in a position of trust within a government ministry is exceedingly disappointing," Det Sen Sgt Murray said.

    "In this case Mr Singh misappropriated significant funds from the ministry over a 12-year period and these funds have now been recovered by police on behalf of the community."

    Det Sen Sgt Murray said the message was clear that people attempting to profit from crime risked the loss of their assets.
