    Man arrested after year-long investigation

A man has been arrested and charged with murder in relation to the death of a motorcyclist in Te Kaha in the Bay of Plenty nearly a year ago.

Police have arrested a Porirua man and charged him with murder, nearly a year after a motorcyclist was killed in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

Don Henry Turei Junior was killed in a crash on State Highway 35, opposite the Raukokere Marae, near Te Kaha, on November 26 last year.

In the days after the death of Mr Junior, police launched a murder inquiry, suspecting he may have been the victim of gang-related violence.

Facebook posts indicated he was a Tribesman gang member.

The 38-year-old was hit by a Honda Odyssey while riding his motorbike with his brother to a wedding reception.

The Odyssey then sped off and was found burnt out near the banks of the Raukokore River, a short distance away.

On Wednesday, Detective Inspector Lew Warner said a 39-year-old man had been arrested for murder and will appear in Wellington District Court.

"This has been a trying time for the family of Mr Turei and we hope that this additional arrest will help to bring relief to his whanau," he said.

Det Insp Warner said police had worked tirelessly and been aided by information from the public to get to this point.

Earlier this year a 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old man were charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder.

Det Insp Warner said the investigation is still ongoing.
