    Quake rocks South Island, Wellington

    A magnitude 5.0 quake has struck south-east of Nelson, with almost 9000 people reporting shaking.


    A magnitude 5.0 quake has rattled the capital and been felt by thousands across much of the country.

    The tremor struck 15km south-east of Nelson, about 9.30pm on Thursday at a depth of 74km.

    Almost 9000 people reported the shaking, with some as far as Auckland and south of Christchurch saying they felt light movement, according to Geonet.
