Fire crews battling Palmerston North blaze

Fire crews are battling a large blaze at a metal scrap yard in Palmerston North in which old car bodies have caught fire.

Fire crews are battling a large fire in a Palmerston North scrap yard in which old cars and metal have caught alight.

This included eight fire trucks after crews were first called to the blaze at Molten Metals in Kelvin Grove Road at about 4am on Thursday, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said.

He said the fire initially posed a threat to a neighbouring property in the industrial area, but crews had now contained the threat and were focusing on extinguishing the blaze.

However, it had been a "difficult fire" to put out so far, he said.

Police are assisting, having set up cordons and diverted traffic.
