Ricky Gervais doesn't think Hollywood was prepared for how brutal his jokes would be when he hosted the Golden Globes

The 56-year-old comedian has taken control of the awards ceremony on four occasions in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016, but his presenting style, which saw him ridicule many of the star guests, was not well received by all of the acting fraternity

But Ricky, 56, insists he wouldn't have changed anything about his approach because these people deserve to be roasted.

In an interview on UK TV show 'Lorraine', he said: "People are always going to be offended. I think they were taken aback by it in America, they're not used to the type of roasting we do here! If you can't tease the richest, most beautiful people in the world, who can you tease? By the end they sort of got it and lightened up a little bit."

Some of celebrities Ricky targeted at the 2016 ceremony included Caitlyn Jenner, Mel Gibson and Ben Affleck.

Caitlyn - who was formerly Bruce Jenner before undergoing gender reassignment surgery - hit back at 'The Office' star after Ricky said that the car accident she was involved in 2015 which resulted in one fatality, "didn't do a lot for women drivers".

Sipping a beer at the podium, Ricky said in 2010, "I like a drink as much as the next man ... unless the next man is Mel Gibson," making reference to Mel's drink driving conviction in 2006.

When Mel Gibson tried to poke fun at Ricky in 2016 by saying, "I love seeing Ricky every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy," the host countered by asking, "What the f**k does sugar t**s even mean?", referencing the insult Gibson infamously hurled at a female police officer during his arrest in 2006.

While introducing Matt Damon, Ricky referred to him as "the only person who Ben Affleck hasn't been unfaithful to," referring to Affleck's recent split from wife Jennifer Garner.

Ricky said: "You should be able to make jokes about anything, but it depends what the joke is."

And he insisted he is used to being the butt of jokes himself.

Talking about his one man stand-up comedy show, he said: "I talk about my wife Jane [Fallon] and my family as well."
