Emergency staff working throughout the night in Rotorua

A state of emergency's been declared in Ngongotaha where a number of properties have been evacuated near the Ngongotaha stream.

A section of the bank burst yesterday afternoon.

NIWA says Rotorua had its wettest hour on record with 51.8mm of rain between 10 and 11 this morning.

Rotorua District Civil Defence Controller Bruce Horne says the huge volume of rainfall has taken its toll, with a number of bridges in the Paradise Valley sustaining flood damage.
