Historic closure of Waitakere Ranges comes into force
A historic closure of the Waitakere Ranges has come into force today.
2 May 2018
All forested areas, with few exceptions, are now closed.
Those who walk on closed tracks, or don't clean their shoes while using the few open tracks, can be chased with fines or trespass notices.
Fourteen compliance officers will patrol the park.
Barriers and signs will be put up at some carparks.
Auckland Council's Biosecurity Manager, Phil Brown, says there are legal tools they can use, but they'd rather people follow the rules - for their sake, and the trees.
Ten high risk tracks in the Hunua Ranges are also now closed.
