Cavs star LeBron James had a career playoff high 51 points to lead the Cavs to within a basket of an unlikely victory.
Guard George Hill had the opportunity to put the Cavs ahead with four seconds of regular time remaining, but missed a free throw, only to have it rebounded by fellow guard J.R Smith who thought they were ahead and failed to put up a shot.
The farcical play left the scores tied at 107-all after regular time.
The Golden State Warriors then broke away from the Cavs early in overtime, and went on to win 124-114.
The Warriors lead the best of seven series one-all with game two is on Monday back in Oakland.
