Latest Real Estate Institute data shows prices have gone up 27 thousand dollars in the past year, to a new record median of 562 thousand.
Chief Executive Bindi Norwell says the record price highlights the continued buoyancy of the housing market.
Three regions achieved record prices in May: Northland, Tasman and Manawatu/Whanganui.
However, Auckland's lagging - with the median dropping to 852 thousand dollars, or 1.3 percent.
