Assistant Commissioner Richard Chambers, who's in charge of investigations, and Detective Superintendent Peter Read met with the Pike River Recovery Agency during the week.
Police now say any new evidence found would be assessed to determine the relevance it would've had on the original investigation - which officially concluded in July 2013.
This year will see the eighth anniversary of the Pike River Mine disaster - in which 29 men died.
