Paua numbers and habitats took a major hit following the 2016 earthquake ... but there's been encouraging signs that the population is recovering while a fishing ban has been in place.
Dr. Tom McCowan from the Paua Industry Council says paua has coped for centuries with changing landscapes.
He says at least another two to three years is needed before serious discussions on lifting the ban should take place.
